Health careers promotion to K–16

The West Texas Area Health Education Center (AHEC) introduces students, K–16, to career opportunities in health care as well as provides information on a variety of health-related topics to promote healthy living to this age group. The program strives to motivate young people in Kids with puppetsrural and underserved areas to choose a career in the health care field. In addition to providing information about health careers, West Texas AHEC is committed to generating children's interest in science-a necessary precursor to pursuing a career in health care.

The West Texas AHEC hosted Health Workforce Diversity Conferences in Lubbock (March 2007) and El Paso (May 2007) as part of a series of statewide regional conferences to improve access to health professions education for underrepresented students, as well as increase the health care workforce in rural and underserved communities. There were 135 participants at the Lubbock conference and 600 participants at conferences statewide.  Post-conference proceedings are available at www.hwdc.org.
