Audiology

Candace Hicks

In the fall of 2000, the Department of Communication Disorders at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center was approved for the first Doctor of Audiology program in Texas in the twenty-first century. Presently, we have approximately 25 - 30 students enrolled in our doctoral program. The history of our program is to keep the size of each class small enough so that students benefit from individualized mentoring from faculty. At the same time, our students enjoy clinical experiences all across the United States in local school districts, major medical centers, in conjunction with physician practices, in independent private practices and industrial settings.

Our faculty come from a variety of backgrounds: psychoacoustics, medicine, educational audiology, rehabilitation and counseling audiology, and engineering. This diversity offers unique perspectives in the field of audiology and access to a wealth of information and clinical/applied practice for our students.

The program is located in a newly constructed facility in the heart of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. The 15,000 sq. ft. facility provides the most up-to-date facilities available for both patients and students. Housed within the program is the Center for Functional Brain Mapping and Cortical Studies (CFBMCS). The CFBMCS studies how the brain interprets sensory information and other cognitive functions. We also share close collaborations with the Departments of Surgery, Pediatrics, and Neurology.

We invite you to come visit us at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Meet our faculty. Talk with our students. See why we're committed to being at the forefront of audiology education.
