The Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) Program, within the School of Allied Health Sciences (SOAHS), at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) is a well-established program with excellent faculty and an outstanding reputation with clinicians throughout Texas and the Southwestern United States. The TTUHSC-MPT program is an entry-level program that produces high-quality, marketable graduates, who are qualified to apply for State Licensure and sit for the National Physical Therapy Licensure Examination (NPTE). The mission of the MPT program is to educate future physical therapists who will value interaction and service to others in all settings, including underserved areas; who will have a keen sense of inquiry for promotion of evidence-based practice; and who can manage increasingly autonomous and diverse professional roles. We seek to educate physical therapists with a broad base of skills and knowledge to address pressing current and future healthcare challenges and to provide an opportunity to pursue specialized aspects of physical therapy practice.
The MPT program's vision is to set the standard for excellence in education, scholarship, and service in the physical therapy profession.
The philosophy of the MPT program is to prepare students to be engaged members of the profession and the health care delivery system. The faculty are committed to providing opportunities for students to become responsible physical therapists in a broad range of activities, roles, and settings in the current and future health care environment. We expect that a graduate of our program will exhibit a commitment to lifelong learning and will excel as a practitioner of evidence-based physical therapy.
The faculty of the MPT program believe that the educational process extends beyond the physical therapy curriculum to various life experiences. It is our intention to develop in the student a sense of responsibility to society, an awareness of his or her duties as a health care professional, provide motivation to continue personal and professional growth, and to foster a desire to contribute to the profession of physical therapy.
Nine of the 12 MPT faculty members (75%) have earned doctoral degrees. Additionally, four of the 12 faculty members have certifications in their areas of expertise. The Physical Therapy program is offered on three campuses: Lubbock, Amarillo and Odessa. The physical facilities at the three campuses include modern, high tech teaching and laboratory equipment designed to facilitate an optimal learning environment.
Consistent with the TTUHSC Mission and School of Allied Health Sciences (SOAHS) Mission, faculty of the MPT program are committed to teaching, research, and service. The Center for Rehabilitation Research, within the School of Allied Health Sciences, consists of five clinical research laboratories (Clinical Biomechanics, Clinical Postural Control, Clinical Cardiopulmonary, Clinical Musculoskeletal, and Clinical Anatomy). This center serves as one of many resources for faculty to productively pursue scholarship.
