Speech-Language Pathology

The ability to communicate is one of our most precious gifts. Think of how different your life would be if you could not communicate-- if you could not express your thoughts, needs, and feelings. Every day, speech-language pathologists help more than 24 million Americans with communication disorders learn to cope and overcome their limitations.

Why should you consider speech-language pathology as a career choice? First, if you have thought about working in medicine or education, speech-language pathology offers a combination of those fields. Second, you should consider speech-language pathology if you want to make a difference in people’s lives. Third, speech-language pathology will be a good match for you if you like variety. Speech-language pathologists are prepared to work with people of all ages in many different settings, including hospitals, schools, clinics, private practices, long term care facilities, early intervention programs, and universities. Regardless of your setting, you will be working with other professionals in the health and education areas, providing help to people who need your services, and earning a good living. Finally, you should consider a program in speech-language pathology if you want to be a professional who is independent and assumes responsibility. Earning a Master’s degree is the first step toward obtaining the state license and national certification that will allow you to work as an independent practitioner.

Is speech-language pathology for you? The profession needs individuals with emotional stability, intellectual curiosity, interest in people and the ability to approach problems with a scientific attitude. We also want people with sensitivity and personal warmth. If this describes you, I encourage you to apply for the TTUHSC graduate program in speech-language pathology. Our graduate program is held in high esteem, and is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Over the course of the two-year program, students will gain experience in the university clinic and at least two other settings. In addition to the opportunities afforded by the Lubbock community, many students participate in externships in other Texas cities and across the country. The academic curriculum is rigorous and comprehensive, so students are well-prepared. (Typically, 90-100% of the second-year graduate students have passed the Praxis Exam in Speech-Language Pathology before graduation.)
