The health care system is changing rapidly. Managed care and other reforms have created a need for physicians with a
greater knowledge of business. To address this need, Texas Tech has initiated a unique program which offers a joint
MD/MBA (HOM) degree.
In this joint degree program, the student will receive both MD and MBA degrees within the four years of medical school.
Superior academic training and challenging real world experience have placed Texas Tech University's HOM Program among the nation's premier health care management programs. As one of the few MBA programs aligned with a School of Medicine, the HOM Program draws upon the resources and expertise of both the Jerry S. Rawls College of Business Administration and School of Medicine. The MBA (HOM) course of study prepares students for managerial positions in the health care industry, with special emphasis on medical groups and ambulatory care settings. Texas Tech's HOM Program offers a unique view of physicians and administrators working together, which is not seen at other programs.
MBA (HOM) Course Description
In the program structure, students will complete the 51-hour MBA (Health Organization Management) program in four years. Students attend classes the summers before and after the first-year medical curriculum. Areas of study include accounting, management strategy, business decision-making skills and methods, business information systems, as well as other core skills in the business curriculum. For a broader knowledge of the organizational context in which health care is provided, students will complete a seven-course concentration in Health Organization Management as part of the program.
HOM Concentration
The HOM concentration is a lock-step program which requires some of the HOM core courses to be taken in sequence. There are eight HOM-specific courses including:
- Health Care Policy
- Health Care Economics
- Field Experience in HOM
- HOM I: Medical Aspects
- HOM II: Managed Care Organizations
- HOM III: Medical Groups and Ambulatory Care
- HOM IV: Integrated Healthcare Operations
- Health Organization Management Capstone
The field experience is an opportunity for students to acquire experience with local health care executives. HOM internships are offered in the the summer and fall semesters. In addition to health care courses, courses in accounting, finance, organizational behavior, marketing and statistics are also required to complete an MBA (HOM) degree. Applicants with no prior business education will be required to take tool courses. Local and national postgraduate fellowships are available for HOM graduates. An accelerated masters program is also available.
Accreditation
The MBA (HOM) program is accredited by both AACSB - International Association for Management Education and CAHME (Commission for Accreditation on Healthcare Management Education). This dual accreditation assures the prestige and enhances the value of the MD/MBA (HOM).
The MD program is admitted by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, which represents the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the American Medical Association (AMA).
