Texas Correctional Facility Health Care
During the 1993 legislative session, the Texas Legislature established the Correctional Managed Health Care Advisory Committee (CMHCAC) and charged it with developing a managed health care delivery system to provide health care to Texas Department of Criminal Justice TDCJ inmates. The CMHCAC was tasked to:
- Set up a statewide health care provider network for TDCJ offenders.
- Maximize the use of state medical schools and their components/affiliates.
- Utilize managed health care tools to contain costs.
To accomplish these tasks, the CMHCAC established a strategic partnership between the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.
