Office of Curriculum
The Year 4 curriculum at TTUHSC consists of 32 weeks of scheduled courses and 12 weeks
of unscheduled time.
Year 4 scheduled activities
Required Rotations: All students must complete two required rotations; a four week rotation in Neurology
and a two week rotation in Geriatrics
Selective Rotations: Each student will complete two 4-week selective rotations (SubInternship and Critical
Care) and a 2-week selective rotation (Ambulatory)
Subinternship: The SubInternship selective rotations focus on providing students with
experiences in the care of acutely ill patients in a primarily inpatient setting.
Student assignments are based on specific interests of the students allied to needs
for additional training in certain areas as perceived by faculty. The SubInternship
Selective may be completed in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Surgery.
Critical Care: The Critical Care Rotation is a four-week selective rotation offered
by three departments (Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Surgery) on all campuses.
Depending on the department, the critical care experiences may be offered in the Surgical
Intensive Care Unit, Burn Intensive Care Unit, Medical Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric
Intensive Care Unit or Emergency Room.
Ambulatory: The Ambulatory rotations provide the student with advanced training in
patient care in the clinic setting with a primary focus on care of patients with chronic
conditions, preventive care and rehabilitative care (such as rehabilitation for patients
with addictions to alcohol, drugs and tobacco in the Internal Medicine rotation).
Ambulatory rotations are offered in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics
and Gynecology, Pediatrics and Psychiatry.
Elective Rotations: All students must complete 16 weeks of elective rotations, generally divided into
four 4-week electives and two 2 week electives. A list of elective rotations offered
on each TTUHSC campus can be accessed at [website]. Note that not all electives are
offered on each campus. Students may complete up to 12 weeks of elective rotations
at other institutions.
Planning Year 4 Schedules: Students will receive assistance from the Offices of Student Affairs on each campus
to develop their Year 4 schedules. Each plan will be evaluated by Clerkship and Year
4 Directors to ensure that the plan is appropriate for the students’ educational needs
and career objectives.
