Division of Sports Medicine
At Texas Tech’s Department of Family Medicine, we offer sports medicine in a primary care setting. Our Sports Medicine physicians reserve Monday and Wednesday mornings for clinic appointments. Our primary care services include medical management and treatment of sports or orthopedic injuries and conditions for all ages. Appointments are also available with our physicians at other times to fit your schedule or to address other health issues that could affect your healing.
We offer the following Sports Medicine services:
- Concussion evaluation and management
- Evaluation and treatment of acute musculoskeletal injuries of all kinds, including sports-related injuries
- Acute fracture diagnosis and management, including splinting and casting
- Joint injections for arthritis and other conditions, including viscosupplementation (Synvisc, Euflexxa) for knee arthritis
- Referrals for physical therapy and occupational therapy as needed for rehabilitation from injury
- Consultation with orthopedic experts, when needed

We are located on the First Floor of the Medical Pavilion in the Family Medicine Clinic at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. To schedule an appointment, please call 806-743-2757 and ask for an appointment in the Sports Medicine clinic. If you are not already an established patient at Texas Tech Physicians of Lubbock, you may need a referral from your primary care physician.

Jennifer Mitchell, MD
Dr. Mitchell grew up in El Paso, TX. She received her BS from UTEP where she was involved in sports medicine as a scholarship sponsored athletic trainer for four years. After teaching high school and working for the El Paso ISD as an athletic trainer for several years, she enrolled in medical school at Texas Tech. Dr. Mitchell gained further experience in musculoskeletal injuries during her seven years of active duty in the US Army. Dr. Mitchell returned to Texas Tech in 2003 as a faculty member in the Family Medicine Residency program. She is board-certified in Sports Medicine and is the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program Director.
David Edwards, MD
Dr. Edwards is a native of El Paso, TX. He graduated from UTEP before attending the Texas Tech School of Medicine. Dr. Edwards completed residency training in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and fellowship training in Sports Medicine at the University of Kentucky. He was in private practice in Topeka, KS before returning to TTUHSC to join the Sports Medicine faculty in 2009. His special interest include the geriatric population and athletes with disabilities. Dr. Edwards is board-certified in Sports Medicine and is the Associate Sports Medicine Fellowship Program Director.
Jeff Paxton, MD
Dr. Paxton is a native of Lubbock. He completed a BS degree from Abiliene Christian University. Dr. Paxton received his medical degree from UTHSC in San Antonio, and he completed residency training in family medicine at TTUHSC in Lubbock. After spending 15 years in private practice, Dr. Paxton joined the Family Medicine faculty at TTUHSC. Dr. Paxton is board-certified in Sports Medicine and in Adoleschent Medicine.
Jana Brock, MD
Sports Medicine Fellow
Dr. Brock graduated from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston and completed family medicine training at the University of Missouri in Columbia. Most recently, she was in private practice in Missouri.
Michael Mendez, MD
Sports Medicine Fellow
Dr. Mendez is a graduate of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, where he also completed residency training in family medicine. He was the Chief Resident at TTUHSC.
