Primary Care
At Texas Tech’s Department of Family Medicine, we offer sports medicine in a primary care setting. Our Sports Medicine physicians reserve Wednesday afternoons for clinic appointments that focus on medical management and treatment for sports or orthopedic injuries. Appointments are also available with our physicians at other times to fit your schedule or to address other health issues that could affect your healing.
Sports Medicine
We offer the following Sports Medicine services:
- Evaluation and treatment of acute musculoskeletal injuries of all kinds, including sports-related injuries
- Acute fracture diagnosis and management, including splinting and casting
- Joint injections when appropriate, including anesthetic medications, steroids and Synvisc
- Referrals for physical therapy and occupational therapy as needed for rehabilitation from injury
- Exercise prescriptions
- Consultation with orthopedic experts, when needed
- Osteopathic manipulation therapy, beginning August 2006

We are located on the First Floor of the West Wing in the Family Medicine Clinic at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. To schedule an appointment, please call 806-743-2757 and ask for an appointment in the Sports Medicine clinic. If you are not already an established patient at either the Texas Tech Family Medicine Clinic or University Family Physicians, then you may need a referral from your primary care physician.

Physicians
Jennifer Mitchell, MD

Dr. Mitchell grew up in El Paso, TX. She received her BS from UTEP where she was involved in sports medicine as a scholarship sponsored athletic trainer for four years. After teaching high school and working for the El Paso ISD as an athletic trainer for several years, she enrolled in medical school at Texas Tech. Dr. Mitchell gained further experience in musculoskeletal injuries during her seven years of active duty in the US Army. Dr. Mitchell returned to Texas Tech in 2003 to become the associate director of both the Family Medicine Residency program and the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship.
Michael Shaffer, DO

Dr. Shaffer is a native of Bowling Green, OH. He received his RN from St. Vincent’s School of Nursing in Toledo, OH, then went on to complete a BS in Biological Sciences from UTEP. Dr. Shaffer received his medical degree from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University, and he completed residency training in family medicine at TTUHSC in Lubbock, before joining the Department of Family Medicine as a faculty member. Dr. Shaffer will complete his Sports Medicine Fellowship training at East Carolina University, Brody College of Medicine, in Greenville, NC in August 2006.
