Plainview Rural Training Track

The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Family and Community Medicine Residency Rural Track residency program in Plainview, Texas is a training program designed with the overall purpose of providing physicians with advanced and concentrated training in the specialty of Family Medicine with emphasis on Rural Medicine. Two residents from each class participate in the track in each year, completing their entire first year of training in Lubbock, before beginning rural rotations in their PGY2 year and continuing in their PGY3 year.

The program is designed to meet the needs of graduates of accredited and approved medical schools desiring to be certified in Family Medicine and to practice primarily in rural communities.

Because of the unique nature in this type of medical practice, participating residents gain intensive procedural and surgical skills in obstetrics, general surgery, dermatology, orthopedics, and endoscopic procedures (such as colonoscopy, nasopharyngeoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy), in addition to all the curricular areas of a traditional Family Medicine residency program,

Disease prevention is the cornerstone of Family Medicine and is given major emphasis throughout the curriculum. Across their three years in residency, Rural Track residents complete a minimum of 20 months in Lubbock consistent with the typical TTUHSC Family Medicine curriculum, and the remaining 16 months of training completed at the Plainview site.
