Illness is influenced by multiple psychological and social factors as well as biological causes which the effective physician must understand. Developing the ability to practice psychiatry includes a comprehensive understanding of the etiology, manifestation and treatment of emotional disorders. A progression of experiences in primary care medicine and increasing responsibilities in psychiatric inpatient and outpatient programs facilitate development of this understanding.
