Department of Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Sciences

Department Chair's Welcome

On behalf of the Department of Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Science at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, I welcome you to our web site, and to our Department.

We are one of the few integrated departments of neurology and psychiatry among the 125 Academic Health Centers in the United States.  We have spent eight years working to lower the barriers between neurology and psychiatry, in our clinical care programs, our educational programs, and in our research programs.  We teach our medical students in an integrated neuropsychiatry format in the hopes that they will not come to see the behavioral sciences as set apart from the other neurosciences.  Our psychiatry residency includes recurrent tutorials and didactic sessions on neuropsychiatric topics.  By graduation, we expect our residents to be able to manage cognitive loss syndromes and some movement disorders in addition to all of the usual general psychiatric developmental tasks.  We do not have a neurology residency.  We have clinical research programs having to do with various aspects of Alzheimer's disease, and we can take one post-residency fellow per year to work in these research programs.  We have additional research programs in our substance abuse section, in our movement disorders clinic, in headache, and in our child programs.
