ACTIVITY AS AN EDUCATOR

1996-1998         Surgical supervisor, Vitreo-retinal Department Santa Lucia Hospital

I made an early commitment to educate Ophthalmology residents. This involved supervision in outpatient retina referrals, as well as inpatient follow-up. The Santa Lucia Hospital retina service, (the major referral center in Argentina) receives cases from the city of Buenos Aires as well as surrounding towns and provinces. It represents an average of 100 retinal referrals a day. We had exposure to a wide variety of cases, including an average of 7 retinal detachments daily ( a mixture between rhegmatogenous, diabetic, traumatic, exudative, etc).

We also had a large amount of clinical cases (infections, minor trauma, uveitis, etc). I did supervise patient clinical examination (indirect ophthalmoscopy, contact lens examination) of residents. (three morning clinics)There we selected cases, discussed available treatments, and planified treatments (Surgery,Laser, follow-up, etc).

Attended to ground rounds (twice a week - with other services), and we had our fluorescein conference
   once a week.

Lectured residents once a week on different topics (diseases, surgical techniques, surgical tools, etc).

I was one of the four staff surgeons at the retina service.

I performed an average of five to six surgical procedures a week (not including laser surgery and office
procedures   (pneumatic retinopexies), assisted by residents

Under supervision of Alex Irvine, MD, I was involved in all clinical as well as academic activities.  We had

three clinics weekly, with an average of 20 patients each.

Assisted Dr Irvine examining and participating in the decision making processes.

Although I had no responsibility over patient supervision, I had full contact with them, performing
complete clinical examinations and assisting an average of three surgical cases weekly at Moffit Hospital.

Learned the pneumatic retinopexy procedure, as well as the standard laser surger procedures (diabetes,
retinal detachment, macular edema, ARMD, etc).

Participated at the VA hospital, assisting Dr Daniel Shwartz in many surgical cases.

Participated in weekly ground rounds, Fluorescein conferences (with invited lecturers, such as  Howard
Shatz MD, George Hilton MD, etc).

Participated in experimental surgery at Beckman Vision Center, trying to determine the role of vitrectomy
   in cataract formation.

Published a paper with Dr. Alex Irvine based on Behcet's disease at the Trans American Ophthalmological
   Society (1997)

2)        Retina Service

      Centro Oftalmologico Recoleta   (2000-2001)

I was Director of the retina service on this private practice institution.

This institution receives all the surgical cases from one of the biggest HMOs of the country.

There I treated very complex forms of detachments referred there from all provinces. I performed about
50 cases including: Diabetic fractional detachments, Giant retinal tears, colobomas, highly miopic multi
operated eyes, removal of silicon oil ( many of them on single eyes). This Center gave me the chance to
perform a considerable amount of cases with Photodynamic Therapy (45 cases approx) (including a
Novartis sponsored course in Barcelona, Spain (under the supervision of Jordi Mones MD) (June 2000).

3)       Fundacion Oftalmologica Ciochi   (1996 to 2002)

This is a non-profit organization (for charity purposes) with an Eye Care Center also available for private
practice. I served as Director of the retina service.

Since 1996 I performed an average of 50 office based consultations per week.

I performed approximately 200 surgical cases (vitrectomy/conventional surgery) (including Diabetics, RDs,
 anterior segment complications, trauma, etc).

I performed approximately 400 laser procedures (PRPs, Focal (tears), Macular photocoagulation, etc).

4)      Ophthalmologic activity nationwide

Invited to develop surgery on selected compromised situations on the following plazas:

Santiago del Estero (Centro de la Vision) : an average of two monthly surgeries, 1998-2002.

San Luis (Centro de ojos San Luis): several cases, on demand, that include Endophthalmities, etc.

Mendoza (Hospital San Martin): on demand. Formosa (Clinica de ojos Formosa): on demand.

PUBLIC SERVICE

The entire work made at the Santa Lucia Hospital (1996-1998), as well as a considerable amount of cases solved at the Ciochi Foundation, has been done on a free basis, in order to help people with no medical insurance coverage.
