Research Interests

Perez-Zoghbi Lab Link  My laboratory is interested in understanding cellular mechanisms regulating smooth muscle contraction of intrapulmonary airways and blood vessels.

  For our research we use  "living" lung slices prepared from animals in combination with molecular, pharmacological, biochemical and imaging tools including high-speed confocal microscopy.

  By studding simultaneously contraction and intracellular Ca2+ signaling in lung slices we demonstrated that the contraction of airways and arteries is regulated by the frequency of intracellular Ca2+ oscillations occurring in their smooth muscle cells. Calcium independent pathways involving the phosphorylation of a number of proteins are also important regulators of smooth muscle contraction and are being studied in our laboratory.

  We are currently exploring several models of airway and pulmonary vascular disease to understand the mechanisms of increased airway and vascular smooth muscle contraction.

  My teaching is focused on pulmonary physiology as well as basic mechanisms of cell signaling and cytoskeleton dynamics.

  Our research is important to understand basic cellular mechanisms underlying lung diseases that affect smooth muscle contractility such as asthma, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary edema.
