Department of Psychiatry
Residency program » Program Description
Program DescriptionThe Psychiatry residency is a four-year program, fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The residency is offered in West Texas where urban centers lie adjacent to areas of critical medical shortages. The program emphasizes general psychiatry supported by departmental and community resources in specialized care areas. Residents participate in a progression of experiences which blend inpatient and outpatient care responsibilities with a series of didactic seminars. Research activities, while not required, are encouraged through opportunities in ongoing clinical and basic science studies. Junior and senior medical students rotate through the department and residents have an opportunity to participate in their education. Likewise, senior residents participate in the education of junior residents.
Residents are eligible to attend Texas Tech University Health Science Center Continuing Medical Education Programs. The Health Sciences Center provides liability insurance coverage. House staff participation in group life and major medical insurance programs are covered by the institution. Other departmental benefits include paid educational leave, an annual book allowance, pagers, and lab coats. Access to Texas Tech University recreational facilities and cultural events is also available.
The first year of the Residency Program includes rotations in primary care, neurology, emergency psychiatry, and inpatient psychiatric treatment in an acute mental health care unit. During the second year the resident has an additional adult inpatient psychiatric experience, as well as a child and adolescent, neurology, emergency psychiatry and consultation/liaison rotations. The resident also begins a limited outpatient longitudinal experience including the follow-up of selected psychotherapy cases. The third year is devoted to outpatient psychiatry with emphasis on psychopharmacologic treatment and several different psychotheraputic modalities. This year also includes experiences with geriatric and substance abuse patients. The fourth year offers the opportunity for on-going ambulatory psychiatry and psychotherepeutic experiences along with a senior in-patient rotation, forensic experience, and elective rotations.
In addition to the clinical rotations, didactics, seminars, and conferences, each resident is assigned to faculty members who act as site and psychotherapy supervisors. These supervisors are rotated so that residents may be exposed to all faculty members.
1. The program receives applications solely through the Electronic Application Service (ERAS) provided by the Association of American Medical Colleges. You can contact your Student Affairs Office for more information on how to apply through ERAS. For more information about ERAS, go to: www.aamc.org/eras/.
2. We require a curriculum vitae, a personal statement, three letters of reference, the medical student performance evaluation, USMLE scores, and medical school transcript, all of which can be transmitted by ERAS. If you are an international medical graduate, contact the Educational Commission for Foreign Graduates (ECFMG) for their application materials and requirements. Once we receive and review your completed ERAS application, we will contact you to set an interview date.
3. Your interview at TTUHSC affords the best opportunity for us to show off our program and for you to meet our residents and faculty and see our facilities. The interview will allow you to become acquainted with both our philosophy and practice for resident education and for you to determine if this philosophy meets your needs.
4. Deadline for applications received: November 1st prior to admitting year
