Block 2: Orientation Week Training Workshops

This page is designed to share the information given to TTUHSC SOM students. It provides advance access to the materials covered during orientation activities prior to the start of classes. We are happy to share this with other students as an illustration of what is possible.  These activities may not occur at your school, or they may be managed differently.  Even if your school is not able to provide the workshop activities, we encourage you to implement them on your own in informal small groups.  Even the lecture notes can be accessed and discussed.

Applying Deliberate Practice in Medical Training - Lecture

This one hour session held during the Texas Tech orientation week will explain the reasoning that underlies Deliberate Practice, why it is widely accepted, and how it applies to medical training  This method will be correlated especially with academic achievement and with learning clinical reasoning.  This is the only part of the program that will be presented to the entire class at TTUHSC, regardless of registration in the program.  This lecture is designed to link the prematriculation concepts to application training in the workshops, but is not essential – however,  the workshops are essential to anyone who values their time.  A video recording of this lecture plus notes for each slide will be posted sometime in August or September.  A copy of the notes slides for this lecture are provided at the above link.

Concept Mapping - Workshop

This workshop is provided as a teacher's version document file to allow editing and adaptation at individual schools.  It matches the workshop described under the TTUHSC program.

Question Analysis/Study Groups - Workshop

This workshop is provided as a teacher's version document file to allow editing and adaptation at individual schools.  It matches the workshop described under the TTUHSC program.

Skills acquired in the Block 2 workshops are developed in the Block 3 Step 1 Prep.

  • These sessions are extracurricular, but highly relevant since they will always be correlated with current course content.
  • Details of the program will be presented during the lecture on Deliberate Practice.

Best wishes for a strong start at your school and for your healthy growth physically, mentally, and spiritually, as a new physician.
