Biography

Dr. Sharmila Dissanaike is the Professor and the Peter C. Canizaro Chair of Surgery at TTUHSC. She is also the Medical Director of the John A. Griswold Level 1 Trauma Center and assistant Director of the Timothy J. Harnar Burn Center at UMC. She is also the current President of the North Texas Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. She is active in clinical surgery, with a focus on critical care, trauma and burns. She serves as a site surveyor and on the Verification Committee for the American Burn Association and is State Vice Chair for the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma.

Dr. Dissanaike has won numerous awards for clinical performance and academic achievement, as well as teaching awards from surgery residents and medical students. She is faculty at the McGovern Center for Ethics, Spirituality and the Humanities and serves on the Ethics Committee of the American College of Surgeons and Chair of the Ethics Committee for the American Burn Association. She has a strong interest in promoting clinical research and serves as the School of Medicine representative to the TTUHSC Clinical Research Institute, faculty in the Center for Translational Neuroscience as well as the Director of the Burn Center for Research Excellence (BCORE). She has over 60 peer reviewed publications, over 120 competitive national and international presentations as well as many invited lectureships. She has served as principal investigator or co-investigator on multiple research projects which have together received approximately $2.5 million in funding. She has served as a research mentor for over 120 residents, medical students, graduate and undergraduate students, thus helping to increase interest in innovation, scientific method and critical thinking among the next generation of physician leaders. Her current interests include promoting physician wellness – “healing the healer” – and developing novel paradigms to train surgery residents in an increasing variety of skills and techniques with decreasing available time.

  Clinical Interests

My outpatient clinical interests focus on skin and soft tissue reconstruction for defects arising from large wounds or cancers, resection of redundant tissue such as excessive fat after weight loss, skin cancers, and hernia repair. I also perform routine general surgery, and have an inpatient practice focused on trauma, burns and critical care.

  Educational Interests

Research interests include all aspects of trauma, burns and the management of critically ill patients. I have a focus on injury prevention and the relationship between substance abuse and injury. I also have an interest in nutrition and surgical healing.  Director of the Burn Center of Research Excellence (BCoRE).
