The TTUHSC School of Pharmacy (SOP) has science-based research faculty working in three departments: the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Department of Biomedical Sciences and the Department of Immunotherpeutics and Biotechnology. Together these departments are comprised of more than 30 research-based and academic faculty and more than 40 postdoctoral associates, graduate students and technicians in Amarillo and Abilene.
SOP researchers use the latest research protocols related to modern drug development, targeting and formulation to focus upon critical research areas such as pharmacology, pharmaceutics, biochemistry, immunology and pharmacokinetics. These faculty investigators employ integrated research to take advantage of cutting-edge molecular advances in biology and medicine as they focus their research upon cancer biology, immunology, vascular biology, cell signaling, immunotherapy, cell biology, molecular biology and neurobiology.
Research growth at TTUHSC requires access to and support of appropriate cutting edge core equipment. The University and the SOP have invested substantial funds in critical new pieces of core research equipment to compliment and extend the SOP's existing major equipment. The new core equipment is available for all SOP research and includes an AB Sciex quadrupole LC-MS/MS, a Caliper in vivo optical imager and a Nikon multiphoton/confocal microscope.
Each year the combined SOP sciences faculty receive millions of dollars in research funding from the National Institutes of Health and other government, foundation and pharmaceutical industry entities. They also contribute more than 60 semester credit hours of teaching to the SOP’s Pharm.D. curriculum and administer the Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences, which is part of the TTUHSC Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
