Bio Dr. Markiewski joined the School of Pharmacy in Abilene as an Associate Professor in the fall of 2010. He is a physician scientist with an interest and background in the biology of innate immunity, tumor immunology and the tumor microenvironment. Dr. Markiewski came to TTUHSC from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a Senior Research Investigator in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine after he finished his postdoctoral training there. Prior to his postdoctoral position at the University of Pennsylvania, he received training in surgical pathology and cytopathology and served as a pathologist at several health centers in Poland.

Education:

• M.D. Medicine, Pomeranian Medical University (Szczecin, Poland), 1984-90
• Ph.D. Pathology, Pomeranian Medical University (Szczecin, Poland), 1990-95
• PDF Immunology, University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, PA), 2001-06

Research Interests:

The research performed in the Markiewski laboratory focuses on the role of innate immunity, including complement and inflammation, in the growth of normal and malignant tissue. Its long-term goal is to elucidate and understand the role of complement in the development of primary and metastatic tumors. Importantly, these studies explore the possibility that the inhibition of complement can be used as a novel form of anti-cancer immunotherapy.
