Position: Chair and Professor
Email: Junxuan.Lu@ttuhsc.edu
Bio Dr. Lu joined TTUHSC-SOP in January of 2011 as professor and chair of the school’s new Department of Biomedical Sciences. His vision for the department’s research is: “new department, new biology, new targets and new drugs.”

Dr. Lu received his Ph.D. in animal science/nutrition in January 1989 from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. He carried out his postdoctoral work at Cornell in nutritional biochemistry (1988-1989) and molecular and cellular biology (1989-1991). He was an associate scientist (assistant professor rank, 1992-1999) and scientist (associate professor rank, 1999-2002) at the AMC Cancer Research Center in Denver, CO. In October 2002, Dr. Lu joined the Hormel Institute University of Minnesota where he led the Section of Cancer Biology as an associate professor (2002-2006) and professor (2006-2011).

Education:

Undergraduate Education

Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, Wuhan University, Wuhan, China, 1982

Graduate Education,

Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science/Nutrition, Department of Poultry and Avian Sciences, Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., 1989

Postdoctoral Education

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Nutritional biochemistry from October 1988 to October 1989, Department of Poultry and Avian Sciences, Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.,
Postdoctoral Research Associate in Molecular and Cellular Biology from November 1989 to December 1991. Section of Biochem, Cell and Molecular Biology, Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.,

Research Interests:

Dr. Lu’s research is focused on prostate and mammary carcinogenesis and chemoprevention. His current National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded research involves selenium compounds for cancer chemoprevention and the identification and development of novel cancer chemopreventive and therapeutic agents from Chinese and Oriental medicinal herbs and natural products. In terms of the biological processes, his research work involves apoptosis, cell cycle regulation, angiogenesis, protein kinase signal transduction pathways and sex steroid hormone function in prostate and breast cancer.

Dr. Lu’s research effort is currently supported by NIH (NCI, NCCAM) R01 and R21 funding. At TTUHSC-SOP, his team and colleagues are taking on a drug discovery initiative through “ph/farmacognosy” of Texas-grown and native plants for cancer chemoprevention and treatment, in collaboration with the Texas A&M University Agri-life Research and Extension in Amarillo. The overarching goal is an integrated drug discovery and development research and training infrastructure for the Texas High Plains (farm-bench-bedside care).
