The Dean's Office

Another major mission of the School requiring a number of effective relationships among School administrators is the Academic Program. The faculty members, through peer governance, have the responsibility for the planning and delivery of the curriculum, assigning doctoral candidate grades, and determining the progressions of the doctoral candidates. These duties are accomplished individually within the faculty member's instructional assignments within a course, in cooperation with the faculty member's teaching team who have been assigned responsibility for a particular course, and within the faculty member's peers for the overall curriculum. It is the Dean's responsibility to assist the faculty in executing their instructional responsibilities so that the program is delivered in an efficient manner, and to monitor the delivery of the curriculum to ensure the Institution, profession, and the doctoral candidates that the program is delivered in a quality manner as approved.

The Associate Dean for Curricular Affairs is primarily the dean's agent in working with the faculty to plan, evaluate and execute the curriculum. This position is responsible for ensuring that the overall curriculum blueprint is followed and the integrated curriculum operates in an effective and efficient manner. Central to this is the direction of the case studies courses and the day-to-day interactions with the individual faculty in helping to meet their needs in delivering a quality program in a cost effective manner.

As direct supervisors of the faculty, the two chairpersons must work cooperatively with the Associate Dean for Curricular Affairs who is the Dean's representative for oversight of the operations of the instructional program. Likewise, these individuals must effectively cooperate with the Assistant Dean for Student Assessment who is the Dean's representative for quality assurance in the delivery of the instructional program.

The Assistant Dean for Student Assessment is primarily the dean's agent in quality control. This person is charged with conducting the annual assessment of doctoral candidates, counseling with the faculty members, appropriate faculty committees, and ultimately the Dean on remediation and/as a last resort, suspension or dismissal.

The Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration serves in the dual role of advising the Dean and Chairpersons on the fiscal affairs of the School and supervising the support services that maintain the infrastructure of the operations. This individual does not hold a faculty appointment, but since this person typically holds at least a masters degree, he may be involved in instructional areas that utilize his expertise and personal abilities.

The Executive Assistant to the Dean is in a unique support role for the dean. This person is charged by the Dean with executing the details of the various tasks that occupy the Dean's time. She has also been given the responsibility for tracking the staff employment processes for the School and preparation of the catalogue in consultation with the dean, assistant/associate deans, and department chairs.

In the specialized areas of student services and staff support, the School requires individuals with unique abilities to work effectively with faculty, administrators and learners to accomplish these key areas for overall School success. Thus, professional and classified staff members have been appointed to the dean's office to work in these key areas.

The Assistant to the Dean for Student Services is responsible for recruitment, pre-admission advisement, staffing the admissions process, student services for the professional program, and being the student ombudsperson. This person will not be involved in assessing the doctoral candidates at any point in the admissions process or curriculum so that the prospective students and doctoral candidates can feel comfortable in taking issues to this person without it impacting admission decisions or academic progress.

The Assistant to the Dean for Student Affairs is responsible for doctoral candidates once they are admitted into the program, through graduation. This person will deal with academic advisement, registration, records, staff the student affairs committees and other related duties.

The unique opportunities for the School to be administratively and professionally responsible for patient care services under contract requires special attention by the Dean's Office. These contracts typically involve significant dollars and may, in certain situations, place the School at financial risk. At the very least, these practices should be developed as role model practices in support of the academic programs.
