Meeting was called to order by chair Reza Mehvar. New committee members were introduced Drs. Kenneth McCall, Marge Weis, Kalkunte Srivenugopal, Craig Cox and Teresa Shih.
Review of 2002/03 Curricular Affairs Committee's action and the list of issues for the general process and the new procedures for curricular review. The 2002/03 CAC completed the review of the Pharmacotherapy courses. The Dean's memo to faculty addressed the curricular mapping and his proposed process and request for review of ACPE competencies and the School of Pharmacy's competency statements. Comparison needs to be made to ensure the ACPE competency standards are included in the SOP competency standards and that they are being taught within our curriculum and furthermore that we can connect our individual ability statements to specific courses. The process will also detect if the same ability statements are being taught in multiple courses. Some ability statements need to be revised and/or rewritten to enable them to link to the curriculum. The overhaul of the ability statements is the responsibility of the Assessment of Learning Committee, whose members are currently studying the relationship between our newly revised competency statements and our ability statements. Dr. Mehvar has met with Dean Nelson to discuss the Dean's charge to the committee and advised the committee of Dean Nelson's request and further discussed the Dean's charge to the committee. Dr. Mehvar further advised that he has conferred with the Assessment of Learning Committee Chair regarding their two committee's mutual goal and to ensure that the two Committees were working together in the same manner toward the same goal and within the time frame. Dr. Mehvar further advised that Dean Nelson wants to have a faculty retreat on the SOP curriculum to present the committee's findings and recommendations to the faculty. Basis of the retreat would be to have the entire faculty consider the deficiencies in the curriculum and the proposed remedies and to resolve them at that time.
The Assessment of Learning Committee has a deadline of October 2003 and the Curricular Affairs Committee has a deadline of January 2004 for their respective assignments in compliance with the Dean's charge.
The next order of business is to develop a process for the preview. Currently there are 49 communication statements; 32 basic science statements; 31 problem solving; 23 dispensing pharmaceuticals; 59 pharmaceutical care; 28 social and administrative sciences; 107 professionalism statements. Using the breakdown of curriculum prepared by the previous curricular affairs committee, the statements were divided by the 7 domains among the committee members. The committee was divided into small groups: Drs. Srivenugopal, McCall and Shi will work on the Pharmaceutical Care and Basic Science statements; Drs. Weis and Jaramillo will work on Communication and Problem Solving; Drs. Mehvar, Cox and Seifert will work on Social and Administrative Sciences, Dispensing Pharmaceuticals, and Professionalism. The process decided on by committee is to take the ability statement and based on syllabus identify what statements are covered. Each syllabus should list the competency statements the course is intended to address, together with the objectives of the course. The initial review is to determine if the statement is covered but the depth of coverage would be directed to the team leader to address. The committee agreed to limit the need for faculty involvement at this time. Dr. Mehvar advised that his intent is to have the committee do as much as possible on their own within their working groups and to bring those results to the committee and to have minimal number of meetings. It was agreed to have a meeting within the next two or three weeks to determine if this process was workable/successful to obtain the information needed. Access to all WebCT course syllabi is to be made available to the committee members. Dr. Mehvar agreed to provide committee members with spread sheets for each category containing those ability statements currently listed.
The next committee meeting is scheduled for August 15 to discuss the results of this process and to modify as needed and to identify problems and issues to be addressed by the entire faculty at the faculty retreat.
