Minutes
The Minutes of the committee meeting on February 2, 2004 were reviewed and approved and will be posted on the Web.
Input from Faculty on Curriculum Mapping
Report and discussion of the input received from faculty regarding the curriculum mapping of courses. We have received responses from 15 faculty team leaders so far. The Curricular Office will notify the team leaders of the remaining courses and remind them to review the curricular mapping and to respond with any additional changes they deem necessary. The committee members also were reminded to send their responses to Dr. Mehvar.
The committee reviewed the courses that have responded and their suggested revisions to curricular mapping data base. These will be reviewed in more depth at our joint meeting with the OAC on April 23. Dr. Mehvar will incorporate these changes into the database and link the each ability to the relevant competency statement(s).
Report from Committee Members on Curriculum Mapping
Individual committee members gave reports on their group assignment and discussed the problems they are having with the program. It was suggested that Dr. Mehvar flag the electives so you can tell what is an elective course while looking at the curriculum data base.
The curriculum mapping will also come in handy in assessment exam because the faculty can look at the ability statement and then tell what courses this ability statement should be taught in so they can go to that course or whoever is teaching that course for assistance in question writing. We will do the actual revision of the ability statement during the joint committee meeting on April 23rd.
Memo from Dean
Committee reviewed the memo from the Dean regarding the law course and discussed it at length. The committee agreed that provision of additional opportunities to practice law in P4 clerkships and other courses, if possible, would be advantageous. It was discussed that once provided the opportunity, students should assume responsibility for their own learning of law. It was suggested that we solicit preceptors view to see if they are inclined to add this to the clerkships.
Next Meeting
The committee decided not to cancel the April 12th schedule just in case this committee needs to meet. We will send out a notice of meeting reminder if we are or are not going to have the meeting.
As for the day-long, joint meeting on April 23rd, the Assessment of Learning Committee will bring the results of their mapping to the joint meeting and then we will be able to review each ability statement for adequate coverage in courses and appropriate level.
