Minutes of 10/13 meeting were approved as read and will be posted. Reminder that December 2 and 3 is the curricular mapping days.
Proposal for new course Clinical Immunizations and Administration
Roland Patry discussed the proposal for a new course in immunization. Joel Epps stated that the State Board of Pharmacy has agreed to allow trained pharmacy student interns administer vaccines through a pharmacist immunizer while they are in their school program. This one-credit hour course consists of 16 didactic contact hour s for theory and a 4-hr lab for practice. Students who fulfill these requirements successfully will receive one credit hour. Additionally, to be certified as immunizers upon graduation, students need to administer a total of 25 immunizations before graduation. The office of Continuing Education is responsible for the arrangement for vaccination opportunities, record keeping, and issuance of the certificates.
There was much discussion about the availability of enough number of pharmacist immunizers, especially in Dallas. The committee recommends that the Office of Continuing Education study the availability of the Pharmacist Immunizers to make sure that all students who take the course have an opportunity to be certified upon graduation.
Considering that this proposal will provide an early clinical practice experience for our students, the Curricular Affairs Committee will recommend accepting the offering of this one-credit hour course. The addition of one credit hour for P-1 fall semester is compensated by the previous decision of the committee to reduce the Anatomy credit by one hour.
Course name and numbers
PHAR1230: Dr. Roland Patry's proposal to change the name of PHAR1230 to Pharmaceutical Care Systems was approved along with a change in the course description (attached) to better reflect the course contents. This also requires a new course number.
PHAR4682: If this is called advanced ambulatory care, is there an intro ambulatory care? Would like to change the name of clerkship and have pre-requisites. To exist as an elective, the course needs to differentiate enough with a required course. There was much discussion regarding the request to change name and add prerequisites to the course. The committee decided to request a syllabus because there are major changes within the syllabus due to the change in course content. The committee will review Phar 4676 to see if there are substantial differences between the two clerkships.
Status of Curriculum Mapping
Members provided the status of their progress toward the general meeting on this subject on December 2 and 3.
The committee members were instructed on the use of an online database developed for our mapping process.
