Recommendations of the Subcommittee on Student Credentialing

  1. Second Probation

Current rules call for a mandatory one-year suspension upon second probation. That is, a student sits out for a year, then returns to take any schedulable classes without compromising prerequisites..

    Recommendation

Change the mandated second probation sanction of one-year suspension to "no new classes until all deficiencies are removed." This would allow students to continue for that suspension year, but ONLY in classes failed until ALL failures are removed. This would prevent a second probation student from progressing to higher level courses until the lower level courses are passed.

  2. Automatic implementation of sanctions

When students are warned of the consequences of poor academic performance subsequent to first, second, or third probation (in writing by the Dean), in the past, we have waited to the end of the Spring Semester to deliberate on implementation of those "promised" sanctions.

    Recommendation

Immediately implement sanctions (those sanctions "promised" in the Dean's letter) upon unsatisfactory academic performance. For clerkships, these sanctions would become operational immediately upon unsatisfactory academic performance in a rotation, at the end of that rotation.

  3. Meetings of the Subcommittee on Student Credentialing

Currently, this committee is mandated to meet only once per year. It is the feeling of the committee that we should be at minimum twice yearly to evaluate progressions after both the fall and spring semesters rather than just annually after the end of the academic year.

    Recommendation

The bylaws of the School of Pharmacy should be amended to mandate that the Subcommittee on Student Credentialing meet at least twice per year after both the fall and spring semester.
