The Chairman presented the diversity criteria that will be used for the 2005 admission process. The factors appear below:
These factors were approved and adopted by the Faculty on December 17, 2003.
Diversity Determining Factors:
- Applicant is from an underrepresented minority
- Applicant is the first generation of the family to attend or graduate from an institution of higher learning
- Bilingual proficiency
- Applicant's responsibilities while attending school, has the applicant helped to raise children or act as a caregiver to another family member
- Residence in underserved rural or urban area
- Applicant's involvement in community or extracurricular affairs
- Any other consideration the institution considers necessary to demonstrate the applicant's potential to diversity such as life experiences, prior collegiate degree(s), full-time employment in a field other than pharmacy
-
Dr. McCall was asked to explain a proposal to incorporate the diversity factors into the current admission's process. After the presentation, Dr. Lenz entertained other strategies and the final product is briefly summarized below.
- During the admissions process an applicant pool will be created and the applicants will be ranked according to the score they receive from the admissions calculator. A cut score will be determined.
- A standard deviation for this pool will be calculated and applicants that fall 2 standard deviations above the mean will be considered outside the threshold and diversity factors will not be reviewed.
- For all other candidates that meet the defined cut score, diversity factors will be considered.
- A sub-committee of three (chair, chair-elect and Assistant Dean for Student Services) will be created to review the remaining applicants and make their decision for admission based upon the applicants ranking score and any diversity factors they have.
- Dr. Lenz presented the Committee's charge from the Dean to address the exam block concept and make recommendations as to its continued use. It was determined that further information is necessary. Rebecca Perry is to provide statistical information on how often the exam blocks are used and by whom. Dr. Lenz asked that Shane Green, Kelly Rudd and Carolyn Bouma serve on an Ad Hoc Committee that will prepare a survey to be submitted to the faculty. The Curricular Affairs Committee will be apprised of the decisions and recommendations made by the SAC members.
- Summer Balcer introduced using a structured interview to obtain more reliable assessment information during the interview process. It was determined to table this issue until August after the full faculty meeting.
- The next meeting was set for August 10, 2004.
- There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 4:45.
