Department Description

The Department of Pharmacy Practice embraces the disciplines of clinical pharmacy, experimental pharmacotherapeutics, pharmacy practice, pharmacotherapy, pharmacy practice management, health informatics, public health and pharmacy administration. Capitalizing on the synergy of these disciplines, the Department provides state and national leadership in contemporary pharmacy practice, education and research. The Department is organized into seven divisions which link faculty with similar practice and research interests: Adult Medicine Division, Clinical Sciences and Research Division, Community Care Division, Geriatrics Division, Pediatrics Division, Primary Care Division, and the Pharmacy Practice Management Division.

The Department spans four Texas communities: Abilene, Amarillo, Lubbock and the Dallas / Ft. Worth Metroplex. Each division is comprised of faculty on several campuses and led by a Division Head who reports to one of the two Department Chairs. The Divisional structure is the primary mechanism whereby faculties with like teaching, practice, and scholarship interests interact. A centrally, coordinated post Pharm.D. accredited residency program is offered at each campus and trains clinician/educators for future practice and academic careers. Patient care services contracts and intra-institutional pharmacy operations programs support a vibrant Pharmacy Income Plan and provide contemporary “real world” teaching laboratories and significant patient care revenue. Clinical and translational research is focused in the areas of adult and pediatric experimental pharmacotherapeutics, drug safety, microbial endocrinology, immuno-pharmacotherapy, and health care outcomes research. The School of Pharmacy and the Pharmacy Practice Department is an active member of the North Central Clinical Translational and Sciences Initiative, one of the NIH funded CTSA awards.
