SERVICES AND PROGRAMS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

The Office of International Affairs is dedicated to serving the needs of international students. It can provide assistance and counseling in difficulties, scholarship opportunities, living accommodations, insurance obligations, and study/work/travel abroad programs. Academic advising is the responsibility of the faculty who are assigned to students upon arrival. An orientation program, required of all new students entering TTU, provides an introduction to the academic life of the University, social aspects of the American society, and legal obligations students must observe.

MEDICAL CARE AND HEALTH INSURANCE

It is essential that students carry supplemental accident, sickness and health, education, and repatriation insurance. Students who failed to carry insurance and have suffered illness or injury resulting in high medical bills have often been financially unable to continue their education. Unlike free medical care in some countries, medical care in the U.S. is very expensive. Most graduate students receiving TA/RA appointments qualify for University health benefits.

A student Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan has been designed specifically for students of Texas Tech University. This plan offers reasonably priced premiums that provide coverage for both the nine-month academic year and the full twelve-month period. Under this insurance plan, students are covered 24 hours a day whether on campus, at home, or traveling. Several other insurance plans are also available specifically for international students studying in the U.S.A. Enrollment brochures for these policies are available from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Please be advised that in order to offer low premiums to students, certain coverages, such as dental care, are not included in these policies. It is strongly recommended that all dental work be completed before arriving in the United States.
