General Lubbock Information
Lubbock is the heart of the South Plains in the Panhandle of Texas and serves as the regional commercial and industrial center for the South Plains of West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. The city is the major retail trade nucleus for more than 500,000 people across 26 counties.
The agricultural industry is the center of Lubbock's economy, and cotton is the dominant force. The Texas High Plains produces approximately 15% of the U.S. cotton crop, and 3% of the world crop. The Lubbock area is also blessed with three award-winning facilities-the Llano Estacado, Pheasant Ridge, and CapRock wineries.
Lubbock boasts many attractions such as Cap Rock Canyon, theaters, symphony, Division I sports, golf courses, and multiple parks, museums and cultural centers. Lubbock is also the home of the legendary rock star, Buddy Holly and each year the Buddy Holly Music Festival is held the weekend closest to the late rock & roll stars birthday, which falls on September 7.
