Community Practice in El Paso
Description

The majority of the residency year will be devoted to clinical training at the Texas Tech Medical Center. Thiswill include exposure to community pharmacy and the ambulatory care clinics of the TTUHSC School of Medicine. Expertise will be developed in disease prevention, health screening and patient consultation. The resident will beextensively involved in pharmacist-managed clinics in diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, HIV, and anticoagulation. The internal medicine clinics will provide the pharmacy resident with ample opportunity to interact with otherhealthcare professionals, including attending faculty physicians, medical residents, medical students, and nurses. Therefore, the resident shall not only have access to pharmacy resources, but can also utilize resources from theSchool of Medicine to learn and grow professionally. It is a program that truly integrates healthcare professionals:the resident will have opportunities to teach the medical team, and in turn, will also have daily opportunities toattend medical grand rounds and lectures.
In addition to practicing clinical pharmacy, the resident will be involved in managing the Pharmaceutical CareCenter, a class A pharmacy. A major portion of the community pharmacy residency is dedicated to enhancing pharmacyoperation skills. Such skills encompass a better understanding of the managerial aspects of community pharmacypractice.
Residents will be assigned to the TTUHSC Pharmaceutical Care Center in El Paso. Themajority of the residency will be spent at this primary site. Additional experiences may be offered at other sites,including rural and other surrounding community sites. This residency offers an academic environment allowing theresident to impart knowledge through active participation in experiential and didactic teaching. Texas Tech utilizesteam teaching, an integrated curriculum, and computerized teaching methods. Teaching opportunities are availablethroughout the 12-month residency program. Residents will be considered assistant instructors to pharmacy students andwill receive an appointment as a full faculty member with the School of Pharmacy.
