New Meningitis Law - Senate Bill 31
http://www.tdh.state.tx.us/immunize/uparch/f01sb31.htm
  • Effective September 1, 2001, Senate Bill 31 (SB 31) required the Texas Education Agency (TEA), in collaboration with the Texas Department of Health (TDH), to provide information regarding bacterial meningitis and its vaccine to students and parents each year. This legislation also required institutions of higher education to provide information about bacterial meningitis to new students at the institution.
  • The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board shall prescribe the form and content of the information, and shall consult with TDH in prescribing content.
  • The TDH Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Surveillance Division (IDEAS) reviewed and edited the informational content regarding bacterial meningitis. The TEA disseminated the information to all school districts on August 23, 2001. This legislation did not require meningococcal vaccine for children and students, it only instructed the TEA to educate parents and students about bacterial meningitis and the availability of the vaccine.
  • Copies of SB 31 may be obtained on-line at the following address: http://www.capitol.state.tx.us For further information on this topic, please contact Tommy Cowan or Linda Crawford with the TEA Interagency Coordination Office at (512) 463-9283.
