Project Director – Katherine Chauncey, PhD, RDN, LD - Contributor to N'Sights Newsletters and Website

The project director is Katherine Chauncey, PhD, RDN, LD, a licensed, registered dietitian/nutritionist, with over 40 years experience. As Professor Emeritus in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Texas Tech University School of Medicine, Dr. Chauncey is still actively involved in medical student and resident education and participates in patient care activities with Texas Tech Physicians. Her interest in cancer nutrition education is illustrated: Fellow in the 1994 Advanced Training Fellowship of the Dietitian Oncology Nutrition Education Project (DONEP); CATCHUM cancer education network since 1997; CATCHUM Nutrition Task force and Steering Committee; National Advisory Board of the Nutrition Education of Practicing Physicians (NEPP). Fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Sales of her book, "Low Carb Dieting For Dummies" exceeded 75,000 copies i.e. US, Canada, and UK. More importantly, Dr. Chauncey is proudly a survivor of both breast and colorectal cancer having undergone surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.

Project Co-Director - Barbara Pence, PhD - Contributor to N'Sights Newsletters and Website

The project co-director is Barbara Pence, PhD, Professor Emerita of Pathology at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. With training in the area of carcinogenesis and cancer chemoprevention, her research interests are in cancer prevention and clinical research. Professional activities included previous CNNT Chair of the Policy Council; Scientific Review Panel and Editorial Board of the American Institute for Cancer Research; and chair of numerous grant review panels at The National Cancer Institute. She has had extensive research funding from National Cancer Institute, American Institute for Cancer Research and Texas Cancer Council for research into mechanisms of diet and cancer prevention. She has published numerous articles and a book on Nutrition and Women's Cancers. She is currently also serving on the Executive Committee of the Cancer Alliance of Texas and the Committee on Cancer of the Texas Medical Association.

Project Founder – Billy U. Philips, Jr., PhD, MPH, FACE

The project founder is Billy U. Philips, Jr., PhD, MPH, FACE who currently serves as Executive Vice President for Rural and Community Health and Director of the F. Marie Hall Institute for Rural and Community Health. He is the Hall Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. His research and funded projects are numerous. His expertise is in health systems change and quality transformation in population health outcomes. He is extensively published on topics in cancer prevention. It is his experience as a caregiver and first-hand knowledge of difficulties experienced by people battling cancer that gives his work deep meaning.

Project Associate Director - Janet Basom RD, LD - Editor of N'Sights Newsletters and Website

The project associate director is Janet Basom, RD, LD at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Department of Medicine Family and Community Medicine. She is both a registered and licensed dietitian with more than 25 years of experience. Her expertise as an oncology dietitian, includes six years of clinical nutrition practice in an out-patient cancer research and treatment center. The past five years she has been involved in CPRIT prevention grant administration at TTUHSC through Cancer Nutrition Network for Texans and West Texas Cancer Survivors Network Phases 1 & 2 working closely with Drs. Chauncey, Pence, and Philips. Janet is a clinician for nutrition consultation through TTUHSC Telemedicine Program.
