|A growing trend among medical schools across the nation has been the creation of medical student run clinics to achieve two primary objectives: community service and education. In early 2008, TTUHSC School of Medicine faculty and medical students established a local free non-urgent care clinic by partnering with Lubbock Impact, Inc., a collaborative effort of numerous people, churches, businesses, and organizations.
The clinic provides free basic healthcare to the working poor and homeless population of Lubbock. Concurrently, the clinic offers an opportunity for medical students to receive hands-on educational experiences through service to the community. Patient care has been expanded to include women's health screenings providing the opportunity for breast cancer counseling and referrals for free mammograms in addition to a monthly dental clinic.
