Unlike other medical specialties, family medicine is not defined by a specific disease, organ or body system, by the age or sex of the patient population served or by the setting in which care is provided. Rather, the family physician's knowledge, skills and approach enables him or her to care for all ages, both sexes and address a range of conditions and illnesses in multiple settings.
Residents begin their training in Lubbock, where they expand their clinical skills and fund of knowledge established during medical school. The Lubbock residency program provides a unique balance between university-based and community-based training. Residents in this 1-2 program complete one year of a rotating internship on the Lubbock campus, and then relocate for their second and third years of training to Abilene approximately 180 miles southeast of Lubbock.
The demographics of family medicine are changing. The training of future family physicians must be grounded in evidence-based medicine that is relevant to the care of the whole person in a community context. Residency training must be technologically up-to-date, built on a solid foundation of clinical science, and strong in the components of interpersonal and behavioral skills.
Our campus is rich in obstetric opportunities for the residents, we have good collaboration with the universities through sports medicine, family counseling services and we work with various public health agencies. We work with other Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center programs as we continue to build a network throughout the Abilene community as well as the rural regions of Texas. Through our collaboration with the Sears Methodist Nursing Facilities our residents are able to promote a full basket of services to the community of Abilene from the cradle to the grave.
