Garrison Geriatric Education and Care Center
Through a unique collaboration, the Sears Methodist Retirement System and TTUHSC established the first teaching nursing home located on a university campus. The Garrison Center serves as a clinical and research training site with special emphasis on care for people with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The 120-bed facility provides long-term care and Medicare Certified Skilled Nursing Care for short-term rehabilitative care. The site also includes a resource library for family caregivers and an educational outreach program in a 26-county area on these topics:
- Caregiver education
- Home retro-fitting programs
- Home health respite training
- Rural physician training on Alzheimer's techniques and resources
- Rural social workers' and discharge planners' training
Memory Disorder Clinic
The clinic offers a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach to diagnosing and managing Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. Experts in the clinical team are board-certified in Neurology, Psychiatry and Neuropsychology to provide the most accurate diagnostic services. In addition, other professionals are available to assist patients and family members in the day-to-day management of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. Available services include:
- Cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic services
- Neuropsychology services
- Neurophysiology services
- Dementia specific care management programs
- Community outreach and education services
- Opportunities to be included in innovative research including genetic typing
- Support groups, information and referral services
- Connections to other leaders in dementia care
The Memory Shoppe
The Memory Shoppe offers products and services focused on slowing cognitive loss and improving quality of life. It provides an alternative or complement to drug therapy for persons with cognitive loss by using a personalized training program that consists of a set of mentally stimulating techniques that have been shown to improve memory and other cognitive abilities.
Integrated Geriatrics Practice
Texas Tech Physicians has announced the creation of a multidisciplinary assessment clinic for complicated patients. Elderly patients with complex medical conditions are screened on Friday mornings by the departments of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Neuropsychiatry. The Integrated Geriatrics Practice highlights:
- Opportunity for patient evaluation by a multidisciplinary team including a geriatrician, neuropsychiatrist, primary care physician, pharmacist, social worker and nurse care manager.
- Access to nutritionists, behavioral scientists, nurses, and other health care professionals as warranted.
- Treatment and therapy recommendation sent to the referring physician.
- Referring physicians welcome to participate in the multidisciplinary visit.
- The Integrated Geriatrics Practice does not supplant the patients's primary care provider; all patents are sent back the the PCP.
- Most insurance plans accepted.

Larry Combest Community Health & Wellness Center
School of Nursing Family Nurse Practitioners and faculty, in consultation with physicians from the TTUHSC Department of Family and Community Medicine, provide disease management and care to seniors and families of all ages. Disease management includes hypertension, diabetes, asthma, obesity and other primary care concerns. The center also has a partnership with Adult Protective Services to provide geriatric assessments in the home for at-risk elderly clients. Senior House Calls Program is an initiative of the Wellness Center that provides primary care to homebound elders in the Lubbock and surrounding area.
Senior Assessment Clinic, Amarillo
Designed for evaluating the unique problems and needs of older adults, a team of specialists including physicians, nurses, social workers and mental health professionals will provide a comprehensive assessment to help an older adult maintain his/her quality of life with independence, individuality and dignity. Senior Assessment team goals:
- Evaluate and assess the patient's physical and emotional health and functional capabilities
- Develop a comprehensive plan of care that will help the patient maintain the highest possible level of physical and mental function
- Collaborate with the patient's primary care physician for complete and coordinated care. Patients can trust that the Senior Assessment team will evaluate their condition thoroughly and communicate all diagnostic findings and recommendations directly to their physician.
- Provide helpful suggestions for handling many of the problems and concerns faced by the patient, their family members or caregivers.
Speech-Language & Hearing Clinic
This clinic serves seniors and families of all ages with hearing loss and hearing disorders including hearing aids, cochlear implants, inability to produce correct speech sounds, school-age language learning difficulties, stuttering, loss of language, loss of memory, swallowing and voice.
