William R. Hurst Foundation Scholarship

As a Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center employee, April Beckling looked no further than her own institution to pursue her education. Paying for her studies was another issue.

"I know the type of work ethic at this university and the emphasis on excellence," she said. "There was never another place I considered. I will be proud to walk the stage at graduation and become a TTUHSC alumni."

On paper, the Beckling family appears to have a comfortable income. But the governmental formula used to determine financial aid often doesn't consider the cost of raising a family or other fiscal responsibilities, she said.

"No one takes into account that we have two young children and we pay over $600 per month for one child to go to daycare/school. My husband and I have also been paying off my undergraduate and his undergraduate and graduate degrees."

Receiving this scholarship, Beckling said, lifted a heavy financial weight off her shoulder as it paid for her final semester of tuition. This has allowed her to pay down other debt incurred during graduate school.
