Luis Benavides, M.D.
Dr. Benavides received both a biology degree and psychology degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1996. He then worked for New York University School of Medicine neuroscience department where he assisted in research projects in collaboration with NASA. In 1999 he attended Boston University School of Medicine and received a Post Baccalaureate. He attended medical school at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston (UTMB) 1999 as a George T. Bryan Scholar. He completed a family medicine residency at UTMB in 1996. During his residency, Dr. Benavides was a recipient of the AAFP Research Scholarship for his interest in diabetes and was awarded as the perfect practice partner by his peers.
Prior to joining Texas Tech, Dr. Benavides spent three years in private practice at Lake Whitney, Texas where he practiced rural medicine. During this time Dr. Benavides was appointed as the Health Authority for Hill County and served on various committees, was a medical director for a nursing home and served on the medical staff for Hill Regional Hospital in Hillsboro, Texas.
Dr. Benavides is board certified in Family Medicine and is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and Texas Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Benavides special interests are in medical student and resident education, rural medicine and chronic diseases.
