Obstetrics and Gynecology
Welcome

Welcome to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology on the campus of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center of the Permian Basin. We are excited about the future of our department and the growth of our institution in the Permian Basin region. I hope that you will find this web site informative and helpful in learning more about what our department has to offer.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has been an integral part of this institution since the inception of this campus. There are currently nine physicians and one PhD. on our faculty. Our primary practice site and academic offices are in Odessa. We have a strong, long standing relationship with Medical Center Hospital, which is our primary teaching hospital. We received excellent support from the private practice community of Odessa which forms the basis of a truly community based educational program. Two years ago, we received a Legislative request to expand our services to Midland. Texas Tech has recently purchased a building adjacent to Midland Memorial Hospital which will be the site of the department's expansion to our neighboring community. Midland will also be the home of the recently dedicated Laura W. Bush Institute for Women's Health. This represents a tremendous opportunity for our program to be in a position for growth and expansion. It will also expand our capabilities for high quality medical student education as well.
The OB/GYN residency program has been in place since 1987. Our residency program is approved for two residents per level in a four year program and our positions are filled with eight great individuals! The department has always taken great pride in the residency program and we strive for excellence in residency education. In September of this year, however, our program was placed on probation by the Resident Review Committee of the ACGME. While this has been a major disappointment for all of us, it has inspired us to seize the opportunity and work diligently to improve our program. I am confident that we will meet all of the requirements necessary to have the probationary status removed at our next site review in two years.
The department's clinical emphasis is excellence in patient care. We currently have two clinic sites. Our resident and specialty clinics are in our downtown Odessa location. Our faculty see patients in our Tanglewood clinic facility in east Odessa. All of our general resident clinics are based on the "continuity of care" model as we strive for personalized, cost effective, high quality patient care. We have several specialty care clinics for our patients, including a High Risk Pregnancy clinic, a Colposcopy clinic, a Urogynecology clinic, as well as our Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility clinic. Within our department, we provide expert Ultrasound services, bone density testing, and we have a modern urodynamic testing laboratory. We have approximately 12,000 patient visits, deliver approximately 800 babies, and perform 300 major and minor gynecologic surgical procedures per year.
There are several major developments that will be effecting our department in the near future. The recent establishment of the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women's Health will play a significant role in advancing our department's research capabilities in the area of women's health. The expansion of our clinical services to Midland is another milestone as we begin to prepare for the arrival of 3rd and 4th year medical students from the Lubbock campus in the summer of 2009. Along with this will come an expansion of our faculty and, hopefully, an expansion of the residency program in the not too distant future. The implementation of an electronic medical record within the next two years will greatly expand our ability to provide our patients with exceptional care.
