$1 Millon Donation Given To School Of Medicine

The SOM at Amarillo received a donation of $1 million for the establishment of The Mrs. J. Avery “Janie” Rush Endowed Chair of Excellence in Women’s Health and Oncology given by the J. Avery Rush family in honor of Janie Rush, an ovarian cancer survivor. The School of Medicine contributed $300,000 to make the full amount of the endowed chair $1.3 million.
A press conference announcing the gift was held on November 13 at the Women’s Health and Research Institute Atrium at 1400 Wallace Boulevard.
The interest from this endowment will provide funds to recruit and retain a nationally-known physician who has both clinical and research expertise in women’s health and oncology.
The selected physician should have extramural funding, preferably from the National Institutes of Health. He or she will work under the realm of the Women’s Health Research Institute in association with the School of Medicine’s women’s health division and the gynecology oncology practice, as well as form partnerships with The Don & Sybil Harrington Cancer Center and the Texas Oncology Physicians Association.
“The Chair of Excellence will assist in offering the latest in research and state-of-the-art treatment to women battling cancer”, said Dr. Rush Pierce, Interim Regional Dean at the School of Medicine at Amarillo. He added that he is extremely grateful to the Rush family for their generosity and interest in the field of women’s health and oncology and looks forward to the School of Medicine’s significant contributions in the fight against women’s cancers.
