Journal Club
Once a month we will meet to review some research and statistics articles from Pediatrics in Review that are available on the Journal Club website and then cover a specific journal article. We will coordinate the type of journal article we review with the lessons assigned for the meeting. There are questions related to different types of articles on the website that we will use to help discuss each article. These lessons are 2 – 3 pages at most and should not take more than 30 minutes or so to read in addition to time finding an appropriate article.
Here is an excerpt from the first article in the series we will be using. “In late 2008, the ABP added 26 new content specifications on research and statistics. To cover these, we introduce a new series. Clinician researchers from the Johns Hopkins University Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine will be writing brief case-based or practice-oriented articles to address these topics. We hope that these articles will be useful for readers in evaluating the scientific literature and adopting evidence-based practice.”
We will not have time during the meeting to read the entire journal article as was done in the past. The time will be spent reviewing the lesson and questions, 15 minutes, and then reviewing the article for its content and how it relates back to the lesson, 30 minutes.
Each presenter will pick an article to review and then send the article to me for acceptance and uploading to the Journal Club website. If for any reason someone can’t meet their obligation for the month they must exchange dates and topics with another on the list who will then present the material assigned for that month.
