Telehealth and Digital Innovation

Institute of Telehealth and Digital Innovation (ITDI)
Our programs aim to meet the challenges of access to medical care in the 108 counties of rural West Texas by advancing three key pillars:
- Expand access to care
- Drive research on health care outcomes
- Enhance education to prepare the next generation of health care professionals to effectively leverage telehealth and emerging technologies.
Connecting Health Technology to Community Needs
Telehealth can reduce the need for long-distance travel to access medical care. Residents of many rural communities can receive the specialty care they need while reducing the demands on individuals and families. ITDI remains committed to advancing and expanding telemedicine models of care across rural West Texas.
Through ongoing initiatives, including support for clinics in communities such as
Fort Davis, Marathon, and other rural areas, we continue to strengthen access to care
by integrating telehealth into existing clinical frameworks.
Strategic Initiatives:
- Telepsychiatry Initiative
- Telepsychiatry Initiative aims to significantly advance mental health services for patients in rural and community hospitals across Texas.

- Access to Breast Health for Texans
- Access to Breast Health for Texans aims to revolutionize preventive breast screenings and education in rural communities across Texas.
- Telehealth Infrastructure Expansion
- Telehealth Infrastructure Expansion is designed to enhance health care delivery across rural Texas through two key components: the Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) Program and the expansion of telehealth equipment to support specialty clinics.
- Healthy West Texas Initiative
- Healthy West Texas Initiative is a community engagement project that highlights how data, trust and partnerships can drive innovative and impactful health improvements.
Telehealth Programs:
- Correctional Health
- Correctional Managed Health Care delivers health services via telehealth to Texas Department of Criminal Justice inmates in the western portion of Texas.
By providing infrastructure and operational support for telehealth visits within TTUHSC, these efforts allow for continued growth and scalability in both the number and variety of services available. Collectively, this work reflects an ongoing commitment to improving healthcare access and adaptability for rural communities throughout the region.
