Each of TTUHSC's six schools promote student success by providing career development to their students. Opportunities include resume and cover letter critiques, mock interviews, personal statement critiques, salary negotiation assistance, and career events.     Career Advice

    Career Advice, that helps connect members across the LinkedIn network with one another for lightweight mentorship opportunities. Career Advice can help you find and connect with the right person in an area of expertise or industry.

    Below are instructions on how to get connected to Career Advice:
    1. Set up a LinkedIn account.
    2. Go to your Dashboard on your LinkedIn profile and click the Career Advice hub.
    3. Click on Career Advice and turn on the advice platform.
    4. Enter your preferences. To find Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center alumni mentors, choose from my school.
    5. Choose area of expertise and industry sector.
    6. Enter topics you would like to receive advice on.
    7. Read Terms and Conditions, click agree, then click finish.

    As soon as preferences are entered, LinkedIn's matching algorithm will send recommendations for matches. If you have multiple requests out, you can swipe to see all the matches. If you select someone who is a match, they will get a message immediately, notifying them of your interest to connect. Once both parties agree, use either LinkedIn's platform or take the conversation offline.

    Veteran Mentor Network

    The purpose of the Veteran Mentor Network group on LinkedIn is to support, inspire, and inform military personnel, military spouses, and veterans, as they plan, establish, and strive to achieve life and career goals, with the intent and hope that they will continue to lead fulfilling, satisfying, and productive lives.

    SVA's Professional Development Community

    The Student Veterans of America's Professional Development Community is to introduce, develop, and connect student veterans and Student Veterans of America chapters to career and professional development opportunities provided by alumni, mentors, sponsors, industry experts, and employers. 

  • Tips for Applying to Graduate Schools

    Research
    Research which schools offer the program that interests you. Use the Peterson's Grad School Search Tool.

    You may want to also research the programs' rankings and check on program accreditation.

    Entrance Exams
    Learn which exam is required for admissions.
    Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)
    Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT)
    Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT)
    Law School Admissions Test (LSAT)
    Dental Admissions Test (DAT)
    Pharmacy Admissions Test (PCAT)

    Take the exam early in case you would like to retest.
    Visit the TTU Academic Testing Services website or in Room 214 West Hall for examination dates and locations. ATS provides testing to TTU students and the Lubbock community, and is an approved national testing site. 

    Application Process
    Be aware of each school's requirements and application deadlines (some schools will require you to apply with the university in general as well as with the specific college department).
    Have an advisor and/or the Writing Center review essays/personal statements.
    If an interview is required, do a mock interview with an advisor
    If you have any questions about the university, the individual program and/or application process, call the specific university department for the program of your choice.
    Visit the school and talk to faculty and current students in the program.

    Tips for Writing a Personal Statement

    The personal statement distinguishes you from other candidates and gives the panel information on "who you are." This is your opportunity to “sell yourself” to the school. It is all about you, them, and where you both can go.

    1. Formal writing is expected. Be sure to always use proper grammar.
    2. Be creative and grab attention with your opening paragraph.
    3. Narrow the focus – not too many ideas.
    4. Make yourself stand out by being honest and stating your truth.
    5. Answer the questions exactly and carefully. Take time for serious reflection.
    6. Be sure to include personality factors, history, successes, failure, and academics.
    7. Sometimes simple is best.
    8. Provide passion, but more importantly provide persuasiveness.
    9. Proofread, proofread, proofread!
    10. Have the Writing Center look over your statement.

    Heroes Linked provides online career Development for veterans, service members, and their spouses. 

    Hire Our Heroes

    Hire Our Heroes is a non-profit organization for veterans operated and founded by veterans. Their goal is to capture each transitioning veteran ideally within one year prior to their discharge to Train, Mentor and Coach them in job placement.

    Hire Heroes USA

    Hire Heroes USA provides free job search assistance to U.S. military, veterans, and military spouses, and help employers with opportunities to hire them. If you are interested in working with a one-on-one specialist visit the Hire Heroes USA website.

    NextOp

    NextOpserves veterans by providing career placement assistance, mentorship, and support in their transition.

    Onward to Opportunity (O2O)

    Onward to Opportunity (O2O) formerly known as the Veteran Career Transition Program (VCTP) is a free career training program that provides professional certification and job placement support to transitioning service members, veterans and military spouses. O2O combines industry-validated curricula, strong partnerships with leading veteran service organizations and private sector companies to provide professional certification and employment services support to transitioning service members, veterans, and military spouses.

    Texas Veterans Commission

    The Texas Veterans Commission takes a comprehensive approach through one-on-one job coaching, interview skills, and resume development. Utilizing local community resources, partnerships, and an action step plan to assist the veteran in gaining meaningful employment.     Texas Workforce Commission/Texas Workforce Solutions

    Career services for veterans, including job placement services, job search resources, training programs, resume and application preparation, career development, and more. Find a location on the Texas Workforce Commission website.
