Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) Garrison Institute on Aging (GIA_) recognizes Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month each November, in alignment with the 1983 declaration by Ronald Reagan establishing National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. The campaign highlights Alzheimer’s disease as the most common cause of dementia among older adults and underscores its growing impact. According to the Alzheimer's Association 2022 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures report, an estimated 6.5 million Americans aged 65 and older were living with Alzheimer’s in 2022—10.7% of that population—with projections expected to reach 12.7 million by 2050. In Texas alone, cases among those 65 and older are projected to increase by 22.5%, reflecting a deepening public health challenge, as Alzheimer’s remains the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and the fifth among older adults.

Throughout November, the Garrison Institute hosts events designed to help caregivers and the broader community better understand dementia while confronting these sobering statistics. By rallying healthcare professionals, caregivers, families, and community members, the campaign promotes accurate information, dispels myths, offers meaningful support, and fosters research. Through education and engagement, the institute strives to inspire collective action in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease and improve quality of life for those affected.
