  • To be eligible to participate in an International Program for Students, a person must be a student at the University. For the purposes of an International Program for Students, a student is defined as all persons taking courses at the University, either full-time or part-time, pursuing undergraduate, graduate or professional studies, specifically excluding School of Medicine House Staff. Persons who are not officially enrolled for a particular term but who have a continuing relationship with the University or who have been notified of their acceptance may be considered students.

For the purposes of an International Program for Students, a person is considered to have a continuous relationship with the University if the person was enrolled at the University for the preceding semester and:

    • If the person has not completed the person’s degree program, is eligible to continue the degree program in the following semester; or

In addition, persons must be in good academic and disciplinary standing as determined by the person’s school at the time the person applies for an International Program and at the time of the dates of travel. Good disciplinary standing is defined as relating to a student not currently on disciplinary probation; or, a student, whose disciplinary suspension, expulsion or conditions and/or restrictions imposed, if any, have been totally fulfilled in a timely manner.

Per OP 10.29, International Programs for Students, International Programs are part of a degree program. As such, schools will determine course credit being awarded for an International Program in accordance with OP 60.05.

    Withdrawal/Refunds

In the event that students are unable to participate in the international program for any reason, TTUHSC will not provide a refund. Any potential refunds must be sought from external entities, such as the airline, third-party provider, or host organization, and will be subject to the specific policies and procedures of those entities.

  • Students selected to participate in a TTUHSC sponsored international program or activity must complete the following requirements prior to their departure or at the conclusion of their international program:

    • Complete a pre-departure orientation through OGH. The pre-departure orientation is two-fold and includes:
      • Phase 1: a set of on-line modules to be completed at your convenience and prior to phase two of the pre-departure orientation,
      • Phase 2: a meeting with OGH. For students located at a campus other than Lubbock, this portion can be completed via Zoom.
    • Complete a packet of on-line emergency & liability forms. Completion of the forms is included in the on-line modules.
    • Obtain a passport if you do not already have one.
    • Obtain a visa if required to enter the host country. Visa information can be found in the country specific information on the Department of State's website
    • Obtain international health & MEDEVAC insurance. This MUST be purchased through the Office of Global Health unless it is provided by your selected international program.
    • Obtain any vaccinations / immunizations required to enter the host country. Visit the CDC website for additional information.
    • Provide course objectives for the international program. The objectives will be dependent upon the course for which credit will be received and should be complied in collaboration with faculty from your school. The objectives will be collected via an online form provided by OGH.
    • Provide two modes of in-country communication. Examples include e-mail, international cell phone plan, iMessage, Skype, Viber, or Internet-based text messaging services/apps (e.g., WhatsApp). This information will be collected through the emergency and liability forms.
    • Complete an exit survey after the conclusion of the program.

Students should also be aware that all curricular aspects of an international program are handled by the schools. Students should direct questions to their school regarding school-specific eligibility requirements, academic credit, course work, and projects to be completed during the international program.

Self-Identified Sites

Students setting up their own program must complete an OGH application in addition to any program forms.

  • The following information outlines the approval process for students interested in participating in a TTUHSC international program at a self-identified teaching hospital/institution abroad or through a self-identified health related organization.

  • Remember: The approval process must begin at the school level. Students should discuss their selected program with their school to ensure credit will be awarded and contact their school for any school-specific requirements, projects/assignments, and/or prerequisites.

  • After visiting with their school about the selected program and receiving academic credit for the experience, students must contact OGH. OGH will provide additional information, including an international program worksheet. This worksheet must be completed to initiate the approval process. After completing the worksheet, return it via email to OGH.

  • After OGH receives the completed international program worksheet, it will be reviewed and a decision regarding approval of the program will be made.

If the selected site is approved by OGH, the worksheet will be forwarded to the dean of the student's school and the Vice President for Academic Affairs for additional approval.

Please note: if the selected site is located in a Restricted Region, additional approval by the International Affairs Council is required. See link below for additional information about Restricted Regions.

OGH will contact the student when the approval process has been completed. Some institutions and organizations require that their own application and approval process be completed in addition to TTUHSC's.

Students should not start this process until they have been informed by OGH that the program request has been approved.

  • If the request is approved by all parties, OGH will contact the student to complete an application. The application provides the information needed to begin the pre-departure requirements.

  • Upon approval of the self-identified site and receipt of the application, OGH will contact the student to begin the pre-departure requirements. Additional information about pre-departure requirements can be found at the link below.
