Students are eligible to apply for a Social Security Number (SSN) only after receiving a job offer. Because the Social Security Administration issues SSNs to individuals authorized to work, students must provide proof of employment when applying. In addition, students must obtain a letter from their Designated School Official (DSO) confirming that they valid immigration status.
Note: Initial F-1 students who have recently entered the United States may apply for a SSN only after they have been in the country for at least 10 days. Applying earlier may result in processing delays. Students must also complete the required immigration check-in and have their SEVIS record activated before submitting an SSN application.
