Children's Medical Center of Dallas
A child falls from a two story window, and within minutes a single phone call activates nearly two dozen beepers at Children's Medical Center of Dallas, assembling the trauma team in the Children's emergency center. Caring for trauma victims — as many as 30 per day —lndash; is just one example of the wide spectrum of care available at Children's, the only Dallas health-care facility that deals exclusively with a variety of diseases and disorders among children from birth to age 18. In addition to the trauma program, Children's has nearly 50 specialty clinics and programs plus a wide range of other pediatric services, including advanced life support.
Children's Excellence
Children's is a private, not-for-profit institution that began more than 80 years
ago. Physicians on the medical staff and employees of Children's are widely recognized
for their accomplishments. For example, in 1995 physicians surveyed by the weekly
news magazine U.S. News & World Report ranked Children's one of the nation's best
pediatric hospitals.
Our Hospital
Today, the 322-bed medical center ranks as one of the nation's best pediatric hospitals.
Children's features a 26-bed pediatric intensive care unit, a 10-bed pediatric trauma
intensive care unit, a 12-bed psychiatric unit, nearly 50 outpatient clinics and a
state-of-the-art emergency center designed specifically for children.
Award-Winning Design
A child-friendly atmosphere is what parents most often notice about the interior
of Children's Medical Center of Dallas — the airy nine-foot ceilings, oversized doors,
child-like shapes trimming the walls, and the use of friezes and color wall guards
that make the inside of the hospital less intimidating than most other hospitals.
Or maybe it's the mirrors on the ceilings of the inpatient units, where curious children
can see what is happening to them and how they look. The waiting areas feature colorful,
child-friendly furniture and even the floor has colored carpet tiles that intrigue
children.
Specialized Care
Children's is the only Dallas healthcare facility that deals exclusively with a variety
of diseases and disorders among children. Children from birth to age 18 receive care
ranging from a simple eye exam to specialized treatments in the areas of:
- Heart disease
- Hematology/ oncology
- Cystic fibrosis
- Kidney disease
- Diabetes
- Sleep disorders
- Gastroenterological/ digestive diseases
- Physical medicine and rehabilitation
- Neurological disorders
- Craniofacial deformities
- Epilepsy
- Asthma
- Weight management
- Down Syndrome
In addition, Children's is a major pediatric kidney, liver, heart and bone marrow transplant center.
Outpatient Services
Extensive outpatient services help children who have a wide array of conditions,
including asthma, cancer, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, digestive diseases, epilepsy,
hemophilia, neurological conditions and sleep disorders. And at the same time that
physicians on the medical staff of Children's address young patients' immediate needs,
they're also asking important questions through research that will help improve the
care provided to future generations of children. In recent years, for example, clinical
research conducted at Children's has helped improve the quality of life of children
who have sickle cell anemia and offered new hope for victims of acute respiratory
distress syndrome.

University Medical Center
University Medical Center, since its opening on February 1, 1978, has been in the forefront of healthcare delivery not only for Lubbock, but also for the entire West Texas region.
Operating under the direction of the Lubbock County Hospital District, the 354-bed hospital has seen more than 500,000 patients and each day strives to fulfill three basic responsibilities. The first of these is the provision of high quality care to Lubbock County and its medically indigent. Secondly, UMC serves as a teaching resource for the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine. Finally, the hospital strives to maintain its financial viability with a minimum of support from the county.
With 354 licensed beds in UMC, admissions for 1997 totaled more than 15,000. UMC staff saw an additional 150,493 patients on an outpatient basis, and the Emergency Center received 37,019 visits in 1997 alone. Emergency Center visits for 1998 are expected to reach more than 44,000 by year's end.
As a financial supporter of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, UMC works hand-in-hand with the School of Medicine and Pharmacy to train the finest healthcare professionals for the future.
