Specialized Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinical Care in West Texas

Welcome to the web site of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Lubbock. I am pleased that you are taking the time to visit us. We want you to become acquainted with our faculty, residents and staff as well as our clinical, educational and research activities. Our faculty and staff are focused on excellence in obstetrics and gynecology. Their enthusiasm and dedication to teaching, patient care and academics is our greatest asset.

We have a Medical Pavilion on our campus where our residents provide outpatient care to women of all ages under faculty supervision. At our Center for Perinatal Medicine we have a diagnostic center for ultrasounds, genetics and fetal testing services that serves a large portion of West Texas. In addition to the gynecology continuity of care clinic, we have a number of other subspecialty clinics including diabetes, high risk obstetrics, reproductive endocrinology & infertility, and colposcopy.

The department also provides ample opportunities for research for students and residents. Each resident is assigned a research mentor in the first year and is expected to present a finished project in the third or fourth year at our annual resident research day. The faculty is actively engaged in a variety of research endeavors across all areas of the specialty. Sam Prien, Ph.D. is the department’s director of research. Dr. Prien’s laboratory is located within the department and serves as a unique resource for both basic science and clinical research.

Education

Residency training is the foundation of your subsequent career in obstetrics and gynecology, so choosing a program that can prepare you to become a competent and compassionate specialist is obviously an important step. Our program at TTUHSC offers an exceptional balance of both obstetrics and gynecology along with appropriate exposure to the various subspecialties. At our monthly journal club meetings residents learn how to critically appraise the medical literature and gain valuable experience with oral presentations. We are deeply committed to providing high-quality patient care, medical student education and residency training.

Research

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has a dynamic and vibrant research program investigating all aspects of women’s health. Our award-winning researcher-clinicians are asking important clinical questions in obstetrics and gynecology, gynecologic cancer, and reproductive medicine that will change how women are cared for in the future. Our discoveries are going far beyond West Texas; our faculty have published books, book chapters, and over 15 peer-reviewed articles, and have traveled to make over 24 presentations at national meetings since 2020. Our faculty are often invited to share their discoveries all over West Texas and the country.

Mentorship is at the core of the research endeavors in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, mentoring students at all levels, residents, fellows, and other faculty members. Each Ob/Gyn resident is required to complete a research project during their residency, and must have a faculty mentor within the department to guide the project. In addition, the department houses a clinical and research laboratory and three faculty members with Ph.D.s, including a statistician to help facilitate the research enterprise. Beyond the internal assets to support research, the department benefits from collaborations within the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, including the Department of Cell Biology and Biochemistry, and Clinical Counseling & Mental Health, across the Texas Tech University System, including the Chemistry Department, the Department of Animal and Food Sciences, and the School of Veterinary Medicine, and with University Medical Center. The collaborative spirit has driven many innovations, resulting in ongoing clinical trials and a robust departmental patent portfolio, including three U.S. patents and one international patent issued to faculty in the department since 2020.
