2021 Recognition Areas
The Great Colleges to Work For® program is one of the largest and most respected workplace recognition programs in the country. All of the program analysis was conducted by ModernThink, an organizational development firm with particular survey and “Best Place to Work” expertise. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was employee feedback.
Job Satisfaction & SupportThis recognition category is based on satisfaction with job fit, autonomy and resources.

Faculty & Staff Well-beingWith roots in work/life balance and wellness models, this category is based on employment experiences such as the opportunity to do meaningful work, the support for work/life balance and the experience of a safe working environment.

Survey Structure and Participation
The Great Colleges to Work For® program is designed to recognize colleges that have been successful in creating great workplaces and to further research and understanding of the factors, dynamics and influences that have the most impact on organizational culture at higher education institutions.
2021 marked the 14th anniversary of the Great Colleges to Work For® program, which included 196 institutions from across the country: 120 four-year colleges and universities and 76 two-year colleges. All accredited institutions in the United States with an enrollment of at least 500 were invited to participate, at no cost to them.
At the core of the program is a two-part assessment process. The first component is a faculty/staff survey (The ModernThink Higher Education Insight Survey©). The survey was sent to over 87,000 faculty and staff, with an overall response rate of 44%. The second part of the assessment process is an institutional audit (The ModernThink Institution Questionnaire© or “IQ”) which captures information detailing various institution demographics, policies and practices.
The ModernThink Higher Education Insight Survey© measured ten core dimensions, plus a Faculty Experience dimension, reflecting managerial and organizational competencies. These dimensions were determined and confirmed through a series of factor analyses and provide the basis for the recognition categories.
Each Great Colleges to Work For® participant was asked to submit a list of full-time employees randomly selected across four job categories: administrators, faculty, exempt staff, and non-exempt staff.
The core survey contained 55 core statements, plus an additional 5 Faculty Experience statements for Faculty only, designed to assess key dynamics and relationships that influence institutional culture and performance.
Employees were asked to respond to each statement using a five-point rating scale (Strongly Agree, Agree, Sometimes Agree/Sometimes Disagree, Disagree, Strongly Disagree). Additionally, there is a Not Applicable response option.
Data was collected from faculty and staff at TTUHSC during the Great Colleges to Work For Survey conducted March 23 – April 9, 2021. 1,638 responses were received. This year, TTUHSC has 42.8% response rate, a 33% increase from the 2019 survey.
TTUHSC was recognized in 2019 in five categories - Collaborative Governance; Teaching Environment (Faculty Only); Facilities, Workspace & Security; Job Satisfaction; Confidence in Senior Leadership. In 2021, the categories were changed to reflect an updated survey, and now total 10 recognition categories versus 12. LEARN MORE »
The survey has provided leadership with valuable feedback that will be used to continue improving TTUHSC's workplace culture.
