Introduction

The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Permian Basin (TTUHSC) Practicum Program offers graduate training in psychological practices. Students develop skills in providing mental health services while gaining the necessary clinical hours required for advancement towards a graduate degree. The Practicum Program offers a breadth of training through rotations in both the Family Medicine Clinic and Psychiatry Clinic. Students are supported by a robust training team consisting of psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, social workers, and physicians.

Practicum Objectives

A.    Build proficiency in delivering psychological interventions to a diverse population.
B.     Learn to navigate electronic medical record through full access to Cerner.
C.     Utilize supervision effectively to support development as a competent mental health provider.
D.    Collaborate with physicians and other members of a multidisciplinary setting to improve patients’ health outcomes.
E.     Provide empathic mental health care to underserved West Texas communities.

Training Pathways

The Practicum Program is approximately 2 to 4 semesters in length, and may be adjusted based on the demands of the graduate program. Graduate students enrolled in counseling, psychology, and social work programs that lead to licensure in Texas may be eligible for inclusion.
