Dr. M. Haris Nazim is a board-certified academic surgeon and healthcare leader currently serving as the Dr. William and Sue Hale Distinguished Professor and Regional Chair of the Department of Surgery at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Amarillo. He has been practicing trauma, acute care, and surgical critical care since 2011, with additional fellowship training in burn and reconstructive surgery and advanced wound care.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Nazim has focused on building and advancing surgical programs across both academic and community settings. At TTUHSC, he has led the transformation of the Department of Surgery into a financially sustainable and growing program, expanded clinical services, and successfully established an ACGME-accredited general surgery residency. He has also played a key role in advancing regional trauma systems, including contributing to ACS Level II trauma verification efforts and significantly expanding access to trauma care across the Texas Panhandle.
In addition to his role as Regional Chair, Dr. Nazim serves as the Regional Assistant Dean for Quality Improvement, where he leads institutional initiatives focused on patient safety, clinical performance, and system-based improvement. He has also served as Trauma Medical Director and remains actively involved in trauma program development, education, and performance improvement. His prior roles include serving as Tactical Medical Director for Randall County, reflecting his longstanding commitment to community engagement and emergency preparedness.
Dr. Nazim earned a Master of Education in the Health Professions from Johns Hopkins University, further strengthening his focus on surgical education, faculty development, and simulation-based training. He is actively involved in teaching medical students, residents, and practicing clinicians, and has contributed to over 40 peer-reviewed publications and national presentations. His work continues to focus on improving surgical access, advancing trauma systems, and developing sustainable models of care in rural and underserved communities.
