Ikemefuna “Ike” Okwuwa, MD, FAAFP, completed his residency training at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center of the Permian Basin, where he remained as faculty and currently serves as the program director of the residency program. He completed a faculty development fellowship at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth. Under his leadership, the residency program has expanded significantly and now trains a total of 69 residents across 8 counties in the Permian Basin, including Southeast New Mexico.
His professional interests lie in leadership and service, and he holds prominent roles in various healthcare organizations. He is the chairman of the Department of Family Medicine at his local hospital and serves as the chairman of the Board of Directors of the Permian Basin Health Network, a Physician-Hospital Organization. Additionally, he is active in organized medicine, serving on the Texas Medical Association’s Council on Science and Public Health and as an officer and Treasurer on the Board of Directors of the Texas Academy of Family Physicians (TAFP).
With a deep commitment to leadership in healthcare, medical education, practice management, and advocacy, he is passionate about mentoring the next generation of physicians, fostering leadership, and humanizing the practice of medicine.
